7 Cameras over a Single Wireless Link

KBC Networks 7 cameras over a wireless linkA new addition to our Ethernet switch series, the ESUL8 allows up to 7 camera signals to be sent securely over a single wireless link.

The new IP unit is an un-managed, 8-port Ethernet switch that can be combined with KBC WESII wireless Ethernet units, to support the link.

The new ESUL8 switches feature eight, RJ45 10/100 copper ports which are automatically configured. The units are designed for low power consumption with broad dual redundant power unputs, have an operating temperature range of -40 to +74°C (-40 and +165°F), and IP40 protection class casings, making them ideal for outdoor and industrial applications.

The capacity for the seven camera system is made possible by our 802.11n compliant WESII units which, through MIMO technology, provide a throughput of up to 100Mbps. WPA2 encryption secures the data over the link, and prevents unauthorized access to the system. This straightforward wireless system is ideal for sites where it's not possible or practical to install cable in locations such as town and city centres, university campuses, historical sites, industrial and commercial facilities, residential apartments, government and military sites, borders and perimeters, and transportation hubs and corridors.

Reduce Complexity & Cost with PoE Switches

Our new PoE switch range is an IP transmission option that makes installation faster, easier and more flexible.

With the PoE data ports on the switch supplying power directly to the attached network device e.g. a PoE IP camera, it's much easier and faster to install new devices and, with fewer cables and power outlets, the PoE approach saves space and labor.

The new PoE switches are designed for a wide range of industrial, non-conditioned and outdoor applications, with extended operating temperature ranges and hardened casings. Depending on the switch selected, the switches are either IEEE 802.3af or, the higher powered, IEEE 802.3at compliant which is suitable for PTZ cameras.

Combined with the WESII wireless range, the new switches are ideal for rapid and temporary deployments, as well as installations requiring the minimum of disruption such as traffic systems and temporary camera systems.

The available switch types include those with a range of fixed RJ45, SFP and combo ports (10/100 and Gigabit) which are MDI/MDIX compliant for automatic configuration. For greater system redundancy and straightforward maintenance, the switches feature dual redundant power inputs as well as a power fail alarm outputs. The hardened casings are IP30 rated and the units have operating temperature ranges of between -40 and +74°C (-40 and +165°F).

Simplicity PoE data ports supply power directly to the attached networked device e.g. a PoE IP camera, on one cable making it easier and faster to install new devices.
Space One set of cables saves spare - no power outlet required at the camera.
Savings Less Labor, faster installation and simpler design.
Reliability Easier application of uninterruptable power supplies centrally.
Flexibility Allows devices to be added simply as the network grows.

Application Story: KBC Switches Perform in Harsh Conditions

Chosen for their extended operating temperatures, dual redundant power input and hardened casings, KBC Ethernet switches have proved just how resilient they are in a recent transportation application in North America.

The Project

The project – a multi-camera, multi-site IP surveillance system, spread over an extensive area – initially required over 200 Ethernet switches to be installed outdoors where temperatures regularly reach 37°C (100°F).

The installed megapixel cameras produce high data rate bursts.  With multiple cameras on a switch, it was soon recognized that the spikes in H.264 encoded video, would put pressure on the buffering capabilities of the switches. Other manufacturers’ switches were trialed but only the KBC switch was able to maintain the steady flow of data required for the video system.

The Solution

At each camera location, the output from up to 4 Megapixel cameras is fed into a KBC switch. From here the signals are transmitted over multimode fiber back to a core switch which connects to the backbone of the network.

To-date, 15 sites have been completed. The KBC switches are performing in the non-conditioned environment for which they were designed, and with operating temperatures of between -40 and +74°C (-40 and +165°F), the project manager is confident that they will continue to do so.

New for 2012

Our plans to develop our product range will continue into 2012. Here are just a few developments to the KBC product range that the New Year will bring:

Extended Ethernet: Available early in 2012, the KBC Extended Ethernet range will offer innovative solutions for passing Ethernet signals over coax and twisted pair cabling to distances in excess of 500m. The units will support fast Ethernet and PoE across the maximum stated distance.

Wireless -MeshII: Building on our current point-to-point and point-to-multipoint wireless offerings, MeshII will deliver IEEE802.11n compliant solutions for large-scale wireless systems.

New IP Products: Our PoE range will continue to expand starting off with a Gigabit PoE Ethernet media converter.

Operation of KBC products relies on correct system design and installation. We’re happy to provide technical support and pre-sales assistance, so please contact your nearest KBC office for further information about any KBC products.
